Uterine fibroid embolization is conducted as an outpatient procedure at our advanced facilities. Our experienced fibroid specialists excel in performing minimally invasive UFE procedures. Prior to the procedure, you will be administered local anaesthesia and conscious IV sedation for relaxation and comfort. A small incision will be made in either the wrist or groin. Utilizing direct image guidance through ultrasound and fluoroscopy, the physicians from fibroid clinics insert a thin catheter into the artery at the top of your wrist or groin, guiding it to the uterine artery.
After identifying the blood supply to the fibroids, the physician injects controlled amounts of tiny particles (similar in size to a grain of sand) directly into the small blood vessels that nourish the fibroids. This discomfort will be managed with prescribed pain medications and is expected to diminish rapidly over the subsequent days. Patients undergoing UFE typically resume regular activities after approximately 7-10 days. During this period, it’s advisable to refrain from heavy lifting, strenuous tasks, sexual intercourse, and adhere to any additional recommendations provided by your doctor.
What To Expect After UFE
Following your UFE procedure, you can anticipate a gradual improvement in your well-being each day. Typically, fibroid symptoms begin to diminish within the initial three months post-procedure. It is important to note that your subsequent menstrual cycles might be heavier than usual during this period. Additionally, some women may pass fibroid tissue within this three-month timeframe.
The majority of women experience a smooth recovery from UFE, with the ability to resume their regular activities within a week to 10 days. Approximately 85-90% of women who undergo UFE find relief from their symptoms, accompanied by measurable shrinkage of their fibroids. Following the procedure, you will have a follow-up appointment with your doctor, which may include additional ultrasound or MRI scans to monitor the healing progress.
